Orlando Pirates secured their fourth consecutive Soweto Derby victory by defeating rivals Kaizer Chiefs1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

As the match appeared to be heading for a draw, referee Masixole Bambiso awarded a penalty in the 94th minute for a foul by Njabulo Blom on Relebohile Mofokeng. Patrick Maswanganyi stepped up to take the penalty and successfully converted it, clinching all three points for the Buccaneers.

Prior to the penalty kick, the Orlando Pirates bench anxiously hoped to secure the win. Maswanganyi executed a perfectly placed Panenka shot to earn his team the much-deserved points. After the match, Bucs coach Jose Riveiro praised Maswanganyi for his performance.

“As much as he is doing sometimes things that are not easy to understand, I do, I do and I want him to be himself on the field because that’s the way also get the best part of Patrick in each and every game.

“And I think today he showed he has that kind of personality to ask for those moments when the situation is crucial, is critical and it’s not easy to take.

“There are not many personalities like that or you don’t have many opportunities to work with personalities like that frequently.

“Obviously, if it’s not going well, it’s going to be another discussion but again happy for him after what happened to him in Cape Town to get the responsibility today in a scenario like this one, 94th minute,” Riveiro said.

Having overcame rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates now shift their attention to Sekhukhune United before their big match with Mamelodi Sundowns.
