Despite finishing second in the previous two seasons, Riveiro’s Pirates have already claimed four trophies under his leadership, including the coveted MTN 8 Cup. The team recently defeated Stellenbosch 3-1 in a thrilling final at Moses Mabhida Stadium to clinch the trophy.
Pirates’ strong start shows championship intent
This season, Orlando Pirates have come out strong, winning all their first seven league matches. However, their unbeaten streak was cut short with a 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch in their eighth match. Despite the setback, the Pirates remain in the race for the title, currently occupying second place with 21 points, tied with Mamelodi Sundowns but trailing on goal difference.
Riveiro is confident that the team’s focus remains firmly on the long road ahead. “We have the same number of points with Sundowns but are separated by goal difference right now, but it’s only eight games we have to play 30 games,” he explained. “Trust me, we are here to compete, and we know how difficult it could be. Winning every game is a challenge, but we are prepared to fight for the title until the last match.”
Bucs will battle until the end
The coach acknowledges the intense competition, with the league offering very little room for error. “We would like to be on top with a 10-point advantage, but I know that sometimes it’s not possible because of the level of the league,” Riveiro said. “We are now preparing for the next game, and we’ll fight until the last game.”
For Pirates, their title pursuit is more than just about the league—it’s about returning to the top after a lengthy drought. The last time Orlando Pirates claimed the league title was in the 2011/2012 season. Fans are eagerly awaiting a return to glory, and with Riveiro at the helm, the belief is strong.
With only three games left in the year, the Buccaneers are focused on finishing strong. The upcoming fixtures will see them face Golden Arrows, Sekhukhune United, and Magesi. As defending champions of the MTN 8, they enter these games with renewed confidence and determination.
