Orlando Pirates face tough decisions on key stars ahead of crucial matches.
Fresh off a hard-fought 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, the Buccaneers are determined to keep their title hopes alive. They now set their sights on Sekhukhune United in a midweek clash before an even bigger showdown against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.
Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top by six points with a dominant 4-0 win over Golden Arrows on Sunday. If Pirates want to stay in the title race, they must continue winning—but that may require some strategic squad management.
Will Pirates rest Chaine again to avoid suspension?
Head coach Jose Riveiro and his technical team could once again opt to sideline Sipho Chaine to ensure his availability for the Sundowns clash.
Chaine, the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, is walking a suspension tightrope with three yellow cards. If he picks up another booking against Sekhukhune, he will miss the all-important match against Sundowns. To prevent that scenario, Pirates might bench him midweek and give Melusi Buthelezi another opportunity, after his solid performance against Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup.
More suspension worries: Sesane and Dlamini at risk
Pirates’ selection dilemmas don’t end with Chaine. Two other key players, Thabiso Sesane and Kabelo Dlamini, also find themselves in danger of suspension. Both received their third yellow cards of the season during the victory over Kaizer Chiefs, putting them at risk of missing the Sundowns encounter if they get booked against Sekhukhune.
Adding to the drama, Riveiro himself is in the same predicament, having accumulated three cautions this season.
Tactical gamble or full strength? What will Riveiro decide?
The big question remains: Will Pirates risk fielding their strongest lineup against Sekhukhune or play it safe and preserve key players for the top-of-the-table clash?
With the title race heating up, every decision could make or break their season. The upcoming fixtures will reveal whether Riveiro’s squad rotation strategy pays off or backfires.
