Orlando Pirates coach to exit but Al Ahly interest is cleared up as news continue to swirl.

Jose Riveiro is at the centre of a transfer storm as top clubs across Africa and the Middle East chase his signature, but the Egyptian heavyweights have officially distanced themselves from the rumours.

Since joining the Buccaneers in 2022, Riveiro has become one of the most successful coaches in South African football. He guided Pirates to three straight MTN8 titles and now stands on the brink of a third Nedbank Cup final appearance in a row, with a blockbuster clash against Kaizer Chiefs looming this weekend.

“Riveiro is not a candidate for Al Ahly club, they have not considered him,” an Egyptian source told The South African, effectively shutting down the speculation linking him to Cairo.

Middle East calling: Saudi clubs show serious interest

While Al Ahly may be out, Saudi Arabian clubs are very much in. Insiders confirm that Al Wehda has shown concrete interest and already initiated contact through intermediaries.

“There are clubs in Saudi Arabia showing interest. Al Wehda is definitely one of them, others in the region are also watching him,” the source revealed.

Zamalek ready to break the bank

Another Egyptian club, Zamalek, has emerged as a serious contender, reportedly preparing a R1.5 million per month offer in an aggressive move to lure Riveiro.

North African giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis are also watching closely, alongside reported interest from Sweden and Finland, signaling just how global the race for Riveiro has become.

CAF performance elevates Pirates coach’s profile

Pirates’ strong showing in the CAF Champions League, narrowly missing the final, has significantly boosted Riveiro’s visibility. The 47-year-old tactician now finds himself on the radar of clubs hungry for continental success.

Despite the mounting interest, Riveiro remains committed to finishing strong. He’s fully focused on leading Pirates to a possible cup double before stepping down at the end of the campaign, following the club’s announcement that he won’t renew his contract.

Stay tuned with The South African as Orlando Pirates coach set to exit with clubs circling.

With the coaching carousel spinning fast, the question now is: If not Al Ahly, who will land the most in-demand coach in African football?
