Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns could be set for a transfer battle for a top Betway Premiershipprospect!

Both Pirates and Sundowns are known to attract as well as fight for quality players to help improve their squads.

Pirates and Sundowns always competing for quality

They have been involved in battles for players like Jayden Adams, Junior Mendieta, Iqraam Rayners, Kegan Johannes and Zuko Mdunyelwa. Ironically, all of the above players chose to join Sundowns over Pirates, interestingly enough, the majority being from Stellenbosch FC. Even more interesting is the fact that another recent target, left-back Fawaaz Basadien is is also from Stellies.

He does not look likely to move this window, but he seemingly, isn’t the only left-back they’re eyeing. According to Soccer-Laduma, both Pirates and Sundowns are looking to rope in Sekhukhune United rising star Vuyo Letlapa! This a player that trained with Kaizer Chiefsin the pre-season!

Letlapa latest joint target

“It’s not surprising that he (Letlapa) had attracted interest from these two teams (Pirates and Sundowns). He is hard working, dedicated and resilient in what he does. You know they signed him from Jomo Cosmos in the ABC Motsepe League and he has proven how good he is in a short space of time. No matter which team he ends up signing for, he will do a great job. He is a good player,” said one source.

A second source claims Pirates and Sundowns view Letlapa as a viable alternative to Basadien.

Basadien alternative?

“You know he (Letlapa) is still young and he has a great future ahead of him as long as he can just remain as grounded as he is now. That’s why it’s believed that apparently they (Pirates and Sundowns) are looking at him as a replacement option for Fawaaz (Basadien) if they can’t get him. Yes he may not have the experience right now but that comes with playing regularly at a top level and that’s what these clubs are looking at,” said a source to the same publication.

The one that got away at Chiefs?

Before Chiefs went to Turkey for pre-season, Jomo Sono drove Letlapa to Chiefs for a trial. This publication reported that the Jomo Cosmos boss claims Amakhosi were impressed by the player and were ready to take him to Europe with them. This before the player decided to leave and ended up at Sekhukhune under mysterious circumstances. Read the story here.

It’s unclear if that incident has closed the door for Letlapa at Chiefs, who are also interested in Basadien. But it looks as if Pirates and Sundowns will go toe-to-toe for his services. Which of the two clubs should he join? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below.
