City closes pools for winter

On Monday, 21 April, the City of Cape Town officially ended the busy summer beach and pool season, with lifeguards going off duty and the majority of swimming pools shutting its doors.

According to the City, most of their public pools have now closed for the winter season, with the exception of indoor pools and the Sea Point swimming pool, which operate throughout the year.

Cape Town’s indoor pools that will still be open include:

  • Blue Downs,
  • Long Street,
  • Retreat, and
  • Strand.

The City revealed that lifeguards had a demanding season preventing incidents, assisting the public, as well as responding to emergencies.

Per statistics, there were 63 drowning incidents recorded during the summer season in Cape Town, with, sadly, 14 of these being fatal.

“Don’t become another statistic. Please obey warning signs, avoid swimming on isolated beaches and always remain within your swimming ability. Learning to identify rip currents can save your life,” the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham warned.
