An old Kaizer Chiefs target could be returning to South Africa after his current contract in Europe was terminated.
Fakel Voronezh part ways with Kaizer Chiefs target Thabo Cele
27-year-old Thabo Cele only has five South African caps under his belt after making a debut in 2017 under former Chiefs boss Stuart Baxter.
“Due to serious health problems in the family, the midfielder and the club terminated the contract. According to the agreement between Cele and the club, the footballer will only be able to play for teams from South Africa until the end of the current contract. We wish the player good luck in his future career, and health to Cele’s family. All the best to you, Thabo!” Fakel wrote in a statement.
Homesickness could see Cele make a move to the PSL
A report from SoccerLaduma back in July this year also hinted at Cele’s homesickness.
“The 27-year-old is reportedly considering a return to the South African domestic scene in 2025.
“Sources close to the player suggest that after almost a decade away from home he wants to be closer to his family and his desire to rejoin the national team fold is driving this potential move back to the PSL with his last appearance coming in the COSAFA Cup in 2023. Although the exact club Cele will join remains unclear, there is a strong possibility he will make a move to the Betway Premiership next year,” the publication added.
“They have been following him for almost three years now and the team’s scouts have been monitoring him and now he is back on Chiefs’ radar. Indications are that they have been talking to his representatives and the talks have been positive. “He will be like a replacement for Siyethemba Sithebe in the defensive midfield position. So it’s an opportunity that could happen in this window period,” said the source.
“He has shown interest in coming back home. No one really knows which club he would want to join but at the moment it’s Chiefs who are interested in him and this could give them an advantage to sign him since they are the ones who have been showing interest in him and also inquired about him,” added the second source.
Lilepo lands at Naturena for R9.6 million
Makabi Glody Lilepo is a 27-year-old Congolese striker who’s most comfortable operating in the wide right channel. Under the legendary Florent Ibenge, Lilepo bagged five goals in 10 Caf Champions League outings.
Would Cele add what Chiefs need in the midfield?
