Global business process outsourcing (BPO) giant, Teleperformance (TP), is opening a call centre in Cape Town that is expected to create 3 500 new jobs.
Daniel Julien, founder and CEO of TP, visited the city this week to mark the opening of the company’s newest site.
This further cemented Cape Town’s status as a premier hub for offshore customer service operations.
Major growth on the horizon
TP already employs 6 000 people in South Africa, with 5 500 based in Cape Town alone. The company now aims to grow its local workforce to 10 000 by the end of next year.
“As a City government, we proudly welcome companies such as TP to our shores,” Alderman James Vos, the City’s Mayco Member for Economic Growth, said in a statement.
“Together with our Special Purpose Vehicle, CapeBPO, we have worked consistently to attract investments in this sector while simultaneously growing the skills base to meet increased demand.”
“TP is one of the businesses that has worked closely with CapeBPO to train operators, many of whom have gone on to be full-time employees in the company.”
Nearly 100 000 people in Cape Town’s call centres
The latest project in this sector is the Youth Skills and Employment Incubator. It helps young people gain the training they need for entry-level jobs in call centres and other BPO roles.
The incubator is run by CapeBPO and funded by the City of Cape Town and the Department of Labour.
Almost 100 000 people work in call centres in Cape Town, serving domestic and international clients. The industry contributed R23 billion to the local economy in 2024.
“TP’s rapid expansion in the region reflects the confidence international operators have in our local talent and operating environment,” added CapeBPO CEO, Clayton Williams.
“It reinforces the sector’s potential to drive inclusive economic growth and further position Cape Town as a leading offshore delivery destination.”
