Orlando Pirates’ season has been nothing short of fascinating, from chasing the quadruple to the announcement of Jose Riveiro’s departure.
The Spaniard has transformed the club since joining in 2022, inheriting a dilapidated, sixth-placed finishing team and guiding them back to the top, finishing runners-up in each of his campaigns.
But it’s on the knockout circuit where Riveiro has proved most effective, winning five domestic Cups with the opportunity to extend it to eight before the end of the season.
Orlando Pirates’ next outing sees them host Egyptian giants Pyramids FC in the first of two Champions League encounters – a win would see them through to the finals. On May 10 they take on Kaizer Chiefs in hopes of claiming their third successive Nedbank Cup trophy.
In the league, they lie twelve points behind Mamelodi Sundowns. The point gap is substantial, but with three games in hand, it’s still anyone’s game.
Mokwena inbound?
Following the Riveiro exit news, many had former Bafana boss Pitso Mosimane as Orlando Pirates favoured successor, but new reports suggest Rulani Mokwena has taken the lead for one of African soccer’s most coveted roles.
“Yes, it’s true that Pitso’s name had come up in the management meetings and was the leading candidate to replace Riveiro, but that changed since Wydad announced that they will release Mokwena at the end of the season. He is now the leading candidate,” The Citizen reports.
Wydad AC and Mokwena have agreed to part ways at the end of the season, making this move all the more likely.
