Veteran actress Nandi Nyembe is making headlines after opening up about her financial struggles.
Her transparency has sparked criticism of the SA acting industry, with accusations that it fails to adequately compensate actors for their work.
NANDI NYEMBE SPEAKS OUT AMID HEALTH ISSUES?
The acting industry is known for being unpredictable, with opportunities often scarce. Actress Nandi Nyembe is the latest actor to face the heavy burden of financial and health struggles.
The actress, who has built a remarkable career by starring on shows such as Zone 14, Soul City, Isibaya, and other notable shows, says she wants equal opportunities to sustain herself.
With 53 years in acting, Nandi has captivated audiences, but she’s now facing financial difficulties.
Actors often express concerns about the lack of retirement funds, provident funds, and unpaid reruns of past shows.
Her transparency has placed the spotlight on the Department of Arts and Culture, urging them to address these plights.
‘GIVE ME A SCRIPT’: THE ACTRESS PLEADS FOR ACTING GIGS
Reports indicate that Nandi, who is currently part of the Showmax drama series Adulting, has depleted her funds while helping her son recover from illness.
A video of the actress receiving assistance from others has circulated on social media, sparking a significant debate.
In the video shared by entertainment commentator Nozipho Mashaba on X, the actress is heard saying that she doesn’t like asking people for help and dislikes the pity she receives, as she believes she can do things on her own.
It appears the people who visited her brought groceries to her home. Nandi emphasised that she simply wants opportunities and that, despite being wheelchair-bound, she is still capable of acting.
“I may be wheelchair-bound, but my brain is not dead,” she said.
“Give me a script, and I’ll show you that this brain is so alive,” she continued.
