The Western Cape Government (WCG) has emphasised the importance of road safety as motorists prepare for the upcoming long weekend.
Friday, 21 March is Human Rights Day in South Africa, thus resulting in a three-day long weekend.
Between 10-16 March 2025, law enforcement officers in the Western Cape issued 200 speeding fines, with the highest recorded speed being 160km/h in a 120km/h zone.
High speeds
The provincial government highlighted that excessive speeding is a major contributor to road crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
At high speeds, drivers have less time to react to sudden obstacles, changes in traffic conditions, or emergencies, making it harder to navigate turns, avoid obstacles, and maintain vehicle stability.
Vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, are especially at risk when motorists speed excessively.
Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku stressed that speeding not only increases the likelihood of incidents, but also reduces reaction time, leading to more severe consequences in the event of a collision.
He further emphasised the responsibility of every motorist to help keep roads safe, urging drivers to prioritise safety at all times – not just during the long weekend but consistently when behind the wheel.
To ensure a safe and incident-free long weekend, motorists are advised to:
• Stick to the prescribed speed limits at all times. Speeding is not worth the risk.
• Allow enough time to reach your destination, without the need to rush, or accept that you will arrive later than planned at your destination.
• Maintain a safe following distance between your vehicle and the one ahead.
• Stay focused on the road and avoid using mobile phones, or engaging in other distractions while driving.
• Ensure everyone is buckled up. This will significantly reduce the chances of serious injury.
• Fatigue impairs judgement and reaction time, stop and rest every two hours or 200km during long trips.
• Reduce speed when visibility is poor or in heavy traffic conditions.Â
