Not for the first time, South African football fans have speculated over what they believe is the use of muti during a high-profile match. This comes after Kaizer Chiefs faced off against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby over the weekend.
Despite the game taking place at the home of the FNB Stadium, Chiefs lost 2-1 to their rivals.
SOWETO DERBY: DID TEAM OFFICIALS USE MUTI?
In a clip doing the rounds on social media, a man wearing a Kaizer Chiefs tracksuit was seen mysteriously tampering with the goal posts.
The incident took place during a field inspection ahead of the Soweto Derby on Saturday, 3 May.
However, some fans believe the man was actually Orlando Pirates’ “resident sangoma”, attempting to disguise his image.
Others claim that the man was an Amakhosi official who wanted to “wash off” the muti used by the infamous rivals.
ORLANDO PIRATES NAMED AND SHAMED
The Soweto Derby is one of several matches in which Orlando Pirates players have been accused of dabbling in muti.
In March, the squad was captured arriving at the FNB Stadium ahead of their match against Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, pictures of the team – wearing brown Adidas two-pieces – doing a pitch inspection raised eyebrows among soccer fans. In each image, the players had one closed fist, which many believe sported “muti.” The group then proceeded to the goalpost.
“Everyone is holding muti in their hands,” tweeted Sundowns fan @UmfokaMagolwane in a post that went viral.
Others pointed to a man, allegedly to be the “resident sangoma,” who had been spotted throwing a mysterious substance on the ground.
