- MK party MPL caused an uproar by suggesting the Social Development MEC looked too good to not be corrupt.
- The speaker forced the MPL to withdraw the insults after he claimed the MEC attended meetings drunk.
The KZN Legislature became a battleground on Thursday after an MK member suggested Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga looks so good because she’s stealing public money.
MPL Phumlani Mfeka caused outrage when he claimed Shinga was “glowing” because she controls government funds. He said corrupt leaders start looking glamorous once they get access to public money.
Speaker Nontembeko Boyce was furious and ordered Mfeka to take back his words.
“On rule 75 you just said the taxpayer’s money has been defrauded and you make the insinuation that MEC Mbali Shinga is now glowing because of that. You need to withdraw your statement unconditionally because it’s an attack on the character and personality of MEC Shinga,” said Speaker Boyce.
Mfeka first tried to dodge the issue by asking if he should withdraw from calling Shinga “glowing”. He then said she wasn’t glowing and tried to withdraw only part of his statement.
The Speaker forced him to withdraw everything he said about Shinga.
But Mfeka wasn’t done. He claimed the MK and ANC would soon take over the KZN government together.
“We have a problem of MECs who don’t respect their job. They always come to the Portfolio committee meetings or the chambers drunk. Once we take over the reign this will be history,” said Mfeka.
He didn’t name which MECs he was accusing of being drunk at meetings.
