  • MK communication head Canaan Mdletshe died in a car crash while returning from an election campaign in Mtubatuba.
  • The former journalist had recently joined MK after leaving NFP where he served as secretary general.

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) in KwaZulu-Natal lost both a by-election and a leader in one night when Canaan Mdletshe died in a car crash.

It is reported that his car collided with a truck.

Mdletshe, who led the party’s communication team in KZN, crashed while driving home from Jozini in the early hours of Friday.

He had been campaigning in ward 16 in Mtubatuba.

His niece Nosipho Mdletshe got the devastating call at 1am.

“As we speak, we are at the scene where he died. We are still shocked and trying to come to terms with his passing,” she told Scrolla.Africa.

Mdletshe was alone in the car when the accident happened.

Party members, who asked not to be named, said he might have been very tired after working non-stop during the by-election campaign.

Mdletshe joined the MK in October after former president Jacob Zuma introduced him to the party.

He came from the National Freedom Party (NFP), which he joined in 2014 when its late leader Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi became deputy minister of science and technology under Zuma and was kaMagwaza-Msibi’s official spokesman when she was Deputy Minister of Science and Technology.

He left the NFP after years of court battles over his position as secretary general.

Before entering politics, Mdletshe had a long career in journalism. He worked as a political reporter at Sowetan and as a news editor at The New Age newspaper.
