Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba has been ruled out for Bafana Bafana’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Nicknamed the ‘Postman’, the Polokwane native has amassed thirty-three international caps since debuting in 2016, aged 20. The reasoning behind his sudden withdrawal isn’t down to injury; instead, it’s the result of Modiba’s wife being on the verge of giving birth.
Upcoming games
Bafana, nestled second on the log but tied on points with group leaders Rwanda, hosts Lesotho later today before travelling to play third-placed Benin, who are also level on points.
- Bafana Bafana vs Lesotho (Friday, March 21, 18:00)
- Benin vs Bafana Bafana (Tuesday, March 25, 18:00)
Hugo Broos is aware of the significance of these two games, saying, “As everybody knows, we have important games in front of us. It’s a key moment,” said Broos.
“I said that already before if we can achieve two victories against Lesotho and Benin, then I think we can make a big step in qualification, certainly also taking into account the other games in the group,
“We will try to do it, and on the other side we know that these will be tough and difficult games,” said the Bafana boss.
Transfer news
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly monitoring Bafana defender Yaya Sithole:
“Of course, the club is still to get the players they need locally but if they can’t then they will go outside the country and that’s why they have reignited their interest in Yaya [Sithole]. He is actually back on their radar,” a source revealed.
“They believe he can complement the team very well with the current midfielders of [Gaston] Sirino, [Mdu] Shabalala, [Ox] Mthethwa, [Thabo] Cele, [Yusuf] Maart and even [Edson] Castillo. So, they will be looking at how they can bring him in now.”
