Mamelodi Sundowns recently parted ways with former head coach Manqoba Mngqithiearlier last week in shock news.

Mngqithi had stepped up as head coach of Sundowns after the departure of Rulani Mokwena for Wydad Casablanca.

Hesacked at Sundowns last week

Mngqithi had been handed the reins at the start of the current season, this after Sundowns fired Mokwena. This was his second stint in the role of head coach in his 12 years at the club. But the curtain on his over a decade stay was brought to a close, however.

In his recent spell as head coach Mngqithi famously fell out with key Sundowns player Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau. The players were not included several match day squads resulting in Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos weighing in. Eventually, the pair apologies according to the former coach, and they returned to the side.

Speaking on that matter, former Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows Steve Sekano believes Mngqithi was disrespected by Sundowns players.

Was Mngqithi disrespected by the players?

“This is Sundowns that we know, the approach was the best. They created so many chances, they were all over Raja and they controlled game from the first whistle, because they wanted to win by hook or by crook, The hunger, they could share the ball among each other and the confidence as well. Players did not respect Manqoba, I think there were issues, other players not happy with the coach, that’s why players were not performing at their best.” Said the Sekano to Radio 2000 as per KickOff.com

Sekano continued by saying that disrespect subsequently saw Mngqithi sacked at Sundowns:

“Because, once one or two players are not happy, they influence others. As a coach you start having problems, even if you think (you have control) but players will always be players, they will make sure you don’t get the results that you want, that’s why Sundowns struggled so much,” he continued.
