Mamelodi Sundowns’ Letlhaku attracts European interest. Will they let him go?
Letlhaku is quickly becoming one of the hottest prospects in South African football. After a stellar season with Sundowns, the young star is now on the radar of top European clubs, particularly in Denmark and Sweden. But will Sundowns let their promising talent make the move abroad?
Letlhaku’s rapid rise began at the renowned School of Excellence (SOE) academy, which has once again become a breeding ground for elite football talent. After just one season in the DStv Diski Challenge squad, Sundowns recognized his potential and promoted him to the first team. The move paid off immediately. He delivered double digits in goals and assists, seamlessly adapting to the demands of top-flight football.
Former Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi didn’t hold back in his praise, highlighting Letlhaku’s exceptional talentat the start of the 2024/2025 campaign.
European clubs make their move
Interest in Letlhaku has turned into serious negotiations. Sources close to the player confirm that Danish Superliga clubs have already tabled offers to Sundowns. However, the club’s valuation of the young star remains a stumbling block in initial discussions.
With his blend of pace, technical ability, and physical presence, many believe Letlhaku has all the attributes needed to succeed in Europe. His statistics back up the hype—three goals and four assists in 15 senior games.
As a left-footed attacker, Letlhaku draws natural comparisons to Shandre Campbell. However, his height and strength give him an added advantage, making his potential ceiling even higher.
Is Sundowns holding him back?
Letlhaku’s agent, Matthew Moore, shed light on the situation in an exclusive interview with The South African:
“Yes, there have been top clubs in both Denmark and Sweden, as well as other leagues, who have made inquiries with Sundowns about Kutlwano (Letlhaku).”
Despite this, Moore revealed that Sundowns remains reluctant to engage in talks. This decision comes even as Letlhaku has seen a decline in playing time under the new coach. His last league start was in November, a game where he made a strong case for himself by scoring two goals against Polokwane.
“This is obviously a major challenge when young players come through the ranks at a big, successful, and ambitious club like Sundowns. The fear is always that young players hit a glass ceiling and struggle to progress due to limited game time.”
Moore emphasized the importance of finding a solution:
“We would love to work with Sundowns to ensure a positive outcome for a young player who we believe is the top young talent in South African football right now. We’d love to help Sundowns prove that their young talents can thrive in Europe and become successful.”
Will Letlhaku follow the European dream?
With European clubs showing serious interest, Letlhaku stands at a crossroads. Sundowns face a crucial decision—hold onto their rising star or facilitate a move that could elevate his career to new heights.
All eyes will be on Sundowns and their willingness to let one of South Africa’s brightest young talents take the next step. Will they seize the opportunity, or will Letlhaku’s European dream be put on hold?
