Limpopo markets warm winter to boost tourism

Limpopo’s warm winter is at the centre of a new tourism drive launched by the province’s Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC, Tshitereke Matibe. Speaking at the Mopani Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park, Matibe officially launched a winter tourism campaign designed to position Limpopo as South Africa’s year-round summer destination.

“Limpopo presents two summers,” he said.

“It’s a hot summer and a warm summer and a cool summer. So, everyone who wants to enjoy summer in winter had to come to Limpopo.”

Warm Winter Destinations Highlighted

As the rest of the country bundles up for the chilly season, Limpopo highlights regions like Phalaborwa and Bela Bela, which offer mild and sunny winter weather. These areas are known for their inviting temperatures even in the heart of winter, making them ideal getaways for domestic and international travellers seeking to escape the cold.

Matibe believes this climate advantage is underutilised and can be a powerful drawcard for the tourism industry.

Tourism Targets Set for Growth

Limpopo is a popular destination, welcoming approximately 600 000 international tourists annually. However, the province now aims to push that number to one million.

“Our target is that we go beyond that to around 10 million,” Matibe added.

“So, if we achieve 10 million for us, we will remain number one in the country.”

He also stressed the importance of domestic tourism in supporting the local economy and maintaining Limpopo’s top spot among provincial tourism leaders. The campaign will feature events, promotions, and partnerships designed to encourage travel during the winter months.

Could Limpopo’s “two summers” redefine how South Africans and international tourists experience winter travel in the country?
