The touching story of three Limpopo-born youngsters who form part of the Gauta BMX club has quickly gained attention after some South Africans have displayed immense support for the boys who are on an inspiring mission to cycle from Burgersfort to Cape Town.

The prevalence of social media has meant more access to more feel-good stories across the country and the world at large. South Africa, in particular, is a country where these stories quickly pick up and thrive, as the spirit of ubuntu is an ideology that many citizens are guided by.

The mission of three young boys from the Gauta BMX Club has captured the hearts of many social media users after it was revealed that they are determined to complete a R1741 km trip from Burgersfort, Limpopo, to Cape Town strictly by cycling in order to generate funds for their local bike club, whose aim is to provide a positive outlet for the youth, and potentially steer them away from drugs and gansterism, which have plagued black communities for decades.

The trio’s journey has been a tale of determination and perseverance as it has already been characterised with a few hurdles and challenges, including harsh weather conditions and tricky terrains, bicycle breakdowns, as well as having limited funds and resources to sustain them for the duration of the trip. Furthermore, one of the cyclists even lost his phone along the route.

Beginning their trip on 2 April 2025, the young boys have made significant progress and have less than 800km to go, as their last update revealed that they were in Colesberg in the Great Karoo. Fortunately for the boys, South Africa has rallied behind them to provide all kinds of support, ranging from emotional support to practical support such as offering them accommodation, sustinence as well as greeted them along the way, with the effort of boosting their morale.

Furthermore, the young boys have even received support from law enforcement officials, as they have been escorted in some areas where it is dangerous for cyclists. Notable celebrities such as DJ Karri and Isaac Hlungwana and many more have used their platforms to urge people to join the cause in any capacity they have, including making monetary donations to the club.

Gauta BMX’s journey from Limpopo to Cape Town might be a successful mission, and will be thanks to the support and unity of mzansi’s citizens and display of ubuntu.
