Vryheid: The ANC and IFP are at each other’s throats ahead of the most anticipated by-election at ward 23 in Vryheid under AbaQulusi Local Municipality in northern KZN. The ANC complained on Tuesday that the IFP brought people with taxis who don’t stay in the area to fraudulently cast special votes. The Wednesday by-election is contested by 19 candidates from twelve political parties. The infighting among political parties has dominated the most anticipated by-election taking place at ward 23 in Vryheid. It is reported that uMkhonto weSizwe Party is facing serious divisions as some members have boycotted campaigns, claiming that the candidate chosen was imposed.

Dundee: The Dundee Regional Court sentenced Sabelo Ngubane, 23, to 18 years in prison for possession of unlicensed firearms and live ammunition. Ngubane was arrested by Hawks members from Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation working with National Intervention Unit and Glencoe K9 unit at Mngeni Reserve near Msinga in August 2023. Members received information about a suspect who had unlicensed firearms in the area. A search was conducted and five firearms including AK 47, 303 rifle, .22 rifle and two 9mm pistols with live ammunition were found. He was sentenced to various terms that will run concurrently, meaning Ngubane will serve 18 years in prison.

Durban: A truck driver from the City of eThekwini was caught red-handed on Friday while stealing diesel fuel from a municipal water tank truck at his home in Hammarsdale, west of Durban. Jimmy Ngcobo, Director of City Integrity and Investigations, confirmed that the employee confessed to committing this illegal act for over three months. Police caught the suspect in Mpumalanga township with 21 containers, each holding 25 litres of diesel.
