  • Induna Zwelithini Buthelezi, who had been on the run, will appear in court with two others on 30 May for Nhlalayenza Ndlovu’s murder.
  • The Democratic Alliance says police ignored their efforts to help, even after they offered a R200,000 reward for information.

A traditional leader who was on the run after the killing of Democratic Alliance councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu has been arrested.

Induna Zwelithini Buthelezi from the Zuma tribal authority in Mpendle was arrested on Friday last week and is expected to appear at the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 30 May.

Buthelezi, who reports to Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma, was wanted in connection with Ndlovu’s murder, which happened in 2023. It is believed the killing is linked to a land dispute.

He is also expected in court on Thursday, 29 May, in connection with separate theft charges.

On Friday, Buthelezi will appear alongside two other people for the murder of Ndlovu.

Democratic Alliance leader in KwaZulu-Natal Francois Rodgers said the party welcomed the arrest and hoped it would bring peace to the Ndlovu family.

“We trust the prosecuting authority and the SAPS investigating unit are prepared for the case as further delays in this shocking murder will not bring closure to Ndlovu’s family and friends,” he said.

Rodgers said the Democratic Alliance had tried many times to work with police on the case and even offered a reward of R200,000.

But he said the South African Police Service “never avail themselves”.
