A 22-year-old grandson allegedly attacked and stabbed his 61-year-old grandmother at their Mountview, KwaZulu-Natal home on Sunday 6 April.
Grandson Allegedly Demanded Money for Drugs
Reaction Unit South Africa reports that the suspect, who allegedly struggles with drug addiction, demanded cash from his grandmother to buy narcotics.
When she refused, he allegedly dragged her out of the house, down an embankment, and towards a nearby stream, where he stabbed her in the neck.
He then allegedly fled the scene, leaving her injured and unattended.
Reaction Officers Respond to Scene
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 16:21.
Upon arrival at the property, Reaction Officers found the woman at the back of a bakkie.
A scarf was wrapped around her neck to control the bleeding, and her clothes soaked up the blood.
According to reports, neighbours heard the woman calling for help and rushed to her aid.
They allegedly provided first aid and transported her privately to hospital for further treatment.
Neighbours claimed that the suspect had previously assaulted the woman.
Grandson killed by Mob After Alleged Abuse
RUSA officers were provided with a description of the alleged attacker and conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area.
However, at approximately 06:14 on Monday, 7 April, RUSA reported that they received a call from a member of the public reporting that the community had apprehended the man.
They had bound his hands and legs with rope and beaten him to death with sticks and whips.
The caller informed the controller on duty that a mob of about 50 people was assaulting the man.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the man had already succumbed to his injuries before the first responders could reach the scene.

This collaborative initiative aims to raise awareness, offer support, and provide practical solutions to address these intertwined societal issues that affect countless individuals, particularly students, in South Africa.
This initiative seeks to address the interconnected issues of substance abuse and gender-based violence in a holistic manner.
Through screenings, counseling, referrals, and widespread awareness efforts, it aims to reduce the stigma surrounding these topics.
