The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal has distanced itself from an executive member’s attack on uMkhanyakude mayor Siphile Mdaka.

  • ANCYL says it received no formal complaints about Mdaka’s performance and is investigating the context of the member’s comments.

The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal has distanced itself from a call to remove uMkhanyakude District Municipality mayor Siphile Mdaka.

Youth League executive Melusi Nhlenyama sparked drama after he was reportedly seen in a video accusing Mdaka of failing to deliver water services in the far north of the province.

But provincial Youth League secretary Lulama Mabude said Nhlenyama was not speaking for the organisation.

“As the ANC Youth League we haven’t received any public complaints about Mayor Mdaka. We always raised our views internally about the performance of the ANC deployees and I can tell you that in this case this is not the view of the Youth League but we will check the context of the video to make a full argument on it,” Mabude said.

Nhlenyama reportedly said they are often accused of being disrespectful when raising concerns with ANC seniors.

Scrolla.Africa has learned that Nhlenyama is upset because he didn’t get a job in the municipality and blames Mdaka for not helping him secure the post.

Last year, Mdaka revived the controversial R133-million Jozini water-pipe project, which includes 15km of pipe meant to service 9,000 households.

The project first drew public anger in 2012 when pipes were abandoned in open fields by a company linked to Sbu Ncube, the late husband of former KZN premier Nomsa Dube-Ncube.

The scandal was exposed by the Sunday Times and led to political pressure on then-premier Zweli Mkhize.
