Keri Hilson is finally clearing the air about a long-standing “beef’ with Beyoncé that came after her 2009 remix of “Turnin’ Me On.” The song included a verse many believed was aimed at Beyoncé which caused tension over the years. Hilson has spoken out and says the words weren’t hers.

A Verse She Never Wanted ,Not Her Intention at All

Speaking on The Breakfast Club on April 9, she explained, “It’s a regret. But not in the way people would think because that’s a song I actually didn’t write. Those are not my words.”The “Pretty Girl Rock” hitmaker reassured fans that she never intended to diss anyone. She took listeners back to when she heard the verse for the first time and said, “Automatically, I was like, ‘I’m not saying that.’ That was my position.” The lines in question written by Ester Dean included, “She can sing, but she needs to move it to the left, left,” and, “She needs to go have some babies.” Keri admitted she “knew immediately” the verse was “shady.”

Keri Hilson Fought against Beyoncé diss track, But Felt Pressured

Hilson revealed that she tried to rewrite the lyrics and oppose the decision, but it wasn’t easy. “I tried to fight him on it and I began writing my own but he… it was quite forceful,” she added, referring to producer Polow da Don. “In an executive-artist way.” She continued recording the verse in an attempt to save her debut album In A Perfect World, which was scheduled for release that same year.

Still Carrying the Regret

While Keri insisted she didn’t fully understand who the lyrics were targeting at the time, she did pick up that the tone wasn’t nice. “I didn’t know exactly who it was about,” she said. “But I knew it was shady.” Now, years later, sheacknowledges how that moment affected her image and career. “It’s a regret,” she repeated as she elaborated on how allowing something she didn’t stand behind to go out into the world under her name probably wasn’t the best idea.

Do you think Keri Hilson should be held responsible for lyrics she didn’t write but still performed?
