Kaizer Chiefs have long admired Michael Olunga; and, with 195 goals in 263 games, it’s easy to see why.
Leading up to the January transfer window Nasreddine Nabi was vocal about his desire to sign more attackers, limited to the misfiring Ranga Chivaviro and injured Ashley du Preez.
AmaKhosi managed to settle Nabi’s wish, bringing in SuperSport’s Tashreeq Morris and Congolese forward Glody Makabi Lilepo – both have begun impressively, the latter scoring the winning goal against Stellenbosch earlier this month.
Reports of Kaizer Chiefs interest in Olunga have died down significantly since their latest arrivals, but have they have disregarded the Kenyan international?
Kaizer Moutang is desperate to guide Kaizer Chiefs back to the top, and will be considering a blockbuster move to do so – Olunga could be the key; but it will come at a cost.
According to transfermarkt, the prolific striker has a market value of around R154 million, which is surely out of AmaKhosi’s reach. Striking a deal seems unrealistic based on the figure, let alone splurging so much on a soon to be 31-year-old, however good he may be.
Chiefs want Zwane?
Another gamechanger Kaizer Chiefs could soon sign is Mamelodi Sundowns veteran Themba Zwane, who is due to become a free agent at the end of the season, unless Miguel Cardoso decides against it.
“Kaizer Chiefs could be watching the situation of a Mamelodi Sundowns star with an interested eye,” KickOff reported.
“This as has been the Soweto giants’ tradition with out-of-contract players at Chloorkop in recent years. Even though Chiefs appeared not to have planned it, it came as no surprise when they signed Gaston Sirino. This after his contract lapsed at Sundowns at the end of June 2024.
“Amakhosi may also not be able to resist the temptation of having the opportunity to sign Themba Zwane, whose contract is left with only five months. With Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos still rating the 35-year-old, it would not be a shock for Chiefs to lure the Tembisa-born man to Naturena.
“He would be following in the footsteps of the likes of Josta Dladla, Katlego Mphela, Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and recently Sirino, who all joined Chiefs from Sundowns as free agents.”
Will Olunga be a good signing for Kaizer Chiefs?
