Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly in pole position to sign Bafana Bafana midfielder Thabo Cele.
After two previous failed attempts, Amakhosi might finally get their fish. The 27-year-old has been released by his Russian club, FC Fakel Voronezhdue to family responsibility reasons.
“Due to serious health problems in the family, the midfielder and the club terminated the contract,” the club said on their website.
Kaizer Chiefs to sign top midfielder?
“According to the agreement between Cele and the club, the footballer will only be able to play for teams from South Africa until the end of the current contract.
“We wish the player good luck in his future career, and health to Sele’s family. All the best to you, Thabo!”
With Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns not poaching the midfielder, Kaizer Chiefs appear to be top candidates. Amakhosi have already signed Tashreeq Morris for this January transfer.
Last year, it was reported that the midfielder was on Amakhosi’s radar. Kaizer Chiefs have brought in Njabulo Blom as the only midfielder this season but the 25-year-old has since switched to right-back leaving space for Cele.
“They have been following him for almost three years now and the team’s scouts have been monitoring him and now he is back on Chiefs’ radar. Indications are that they have been talking to his representatives and the talks have been positive. “He will be like a replacement for Siyethemba Sithebe in the defensive midfield position. So it’s an opportunity that could happen in this window period,” Soccer Ladumareported.
Time will tell if Kaizer Chiefs will pounce on the midfielder. Downs and Pirates might look to bring him in should any of their midfield player get an injury.
