Kaizer Chiefs still want star midfielder amid uncertainty at his current club.
Rumors swirling from Sekhukhune United suggest that Jamie Webber, the former SuperSport United midfielder, has lost favour at the club. This development has reignited interest from Kaizer Chiefs, who previously pursued the player before his move to Babina Noko.
A source familiar with the situation confirmed, “Yes, it’s a different situation altogether now. This time around, you know he is with Sekhukhune United under different circumstances, and that’s why Chiefs have shown interest again.”
Considering a strategic move for Webber
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly weighing their options regarding the 27-year-old midfielder. While a January transfer seems unlikely, the club could make a move once Webber’s contract expires in June 2025. According to insiders, Chiefs might prefer signing him as a free agent to avoid transfer fees.
The source added, “It’s not always about the coach. Sometimes, it’s about the scouts and recruiters who identify players for the team. Chiefs still believe Webber can contribute. He’s only 27 and has a bright future ahead of him.”
Lack of game time could favour Chiefs
Webber’s struggles for game time at Sekhukhune United could work in Kaizer Chiefs’ favor. A second source explained, “Things don’t seem very good for him at the club now, and that would be a plus for Chiefs. He hasn’t featured in any game this season, and his issues date back to last season. We don’t think he’ll stay beyond his current contract.”
Webber joined Babina Noko in 2023 on a two-year deal with an optional one-year extension. His primary contract ends in June 2025, and it remains unclear if Sekhukhune United will activate the extension.
Why still club interested in Webber
Despite his challenges at Sekhukhune United, Webber’s talent and potential remain evident. His age—27 years old—positions him as a player who can still deliver peak performances for a few more years. Chiefs’ scouts and recruiters recognize this, making him a strong candidate to strengthen the midfield.
Kaizer Chiefs continue to monitor Webber’s situation, and the clock ticks closer to his contract’s expiration. Could this be the fresh start Webber needs? Only time will tell.
