Kaizer Chiefs’ shocking transfer proves everyone totally wrong.
Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has addressed the backlash surrounding the club’s recent acquisition of striker Tashreeq Morris from SuperSport United. Despite widespread scepticism from fans, Nabi remains confident in Morris’ ability to contribute significantly to the squad.
Why Morris was signed
Morris joined the Chiefs in the second half of the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership season as part of a swap deal that sent Christian Saile to SuperSport United. The decision sparked immediate debate among supporters, many of whom questioned Morris’ goal-scoring track record. However, Nabi emphasized that the move was strategic and necessary to reinforce the team’s attacking options.
Since his arrival, Morris has been a key figure in Nabi’s game plan, earning a place in the starting lineup for two consecutive matches. He played a crucial role in the thrilling 2-2 draw against AmaZulu last Tuesday and started in the 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Friday.
Morris was not the only fresh face to join Amakhosi in January 2025. Chiefs also welcomed former South African junior international Thabo Cele and talented attacker Glody Lilepo.
Coach Nabi defends the decision
Responding to critics, Nabi stood by the club’s recruitment choices, highlighting the qualities that made Morris a valuable addition.
“Every time you recruit new players, you have to do your due diligence to get the right fit for your team. We feel that we did due diligence to get the players who could help right away. Because in January you need to bring a player that’s ready to help immediately,” Nabi explained.
“Thabo is a player that we have been following. He’s a player that likes the ball, and we want those kinds of players who are brave and want to play.
“Tashreeq, I believe that most people were surprised that he’s coming to Kaizer Chiefs. But you have to see the qualities he brings to the team. Now we can play the ball up; he can hold it for us and give us enough time to get up there.”
Proving the doubters wrong at Chiefs
Despite not finding the back of the net yet, Morris has already demonstrated his value through his pressing, energy, and ability to create goal-scoring opportunities. His performances indicate that he could become a vital asset for Chiefs as the season progresses.
While scepticism remains, Nabi’s belief in Morris suggests that the striker’s presence in the squad is more than just a short-term fix. It’s a calculated move aimed at bolstering the team’s attacking depth. Only time will tell if this gamble will pay off for Amakhosi.
