Kaizer Chiefs’ new club captain? Appollis, Velebayi, Mayele update

As Kaizer Chiefs shoot for the stars, they must first lay the foundation.

There’s speculation surrounding who will wear the armband if Yusuf Maart’s dip in form continues – Nasreddiine Nabi has substituted the 29-year-midfielder in the last two games.

The Glamour Boys new defensive signing, Inacio Miguel, took over captain duties in their Cufa Cup victory, suggesting that he’s next in line for the armband, albeit only playing a handful of games for the Soweto side.

Transfer gossip

Nabi continues to demand more players following seven signings in the winter transfer window.

An anonymous SoccerLaduma source confirmed his desire for attacking-midfielder Oswin Appollis, saying, “The coach had seen his games on tape and followed him in (scouting) reports. Nabi was happy and that’s why there were talks with Polokwane City for the player. Now he has seen him in action for both club and country and he demands for him to be signed in January”.

Congolese 30-year-old Fiston Mayele and Cape Town City’s Asenele Velebayi are also on the Tunisian’s radar.

Veleabayi’s agent, Lance Davids, mentioned that negotiations took place over July and August, saying, “So, of course, there was a lot of back and forth – Chiefs put in an offer, and the value was too low for Cape Town Spurs,

“Chiefs came back with a second offer and gave, in my opinion, a valuation that was very fair with add-ons, and they also didn’t accept that. They thought the valuation was low, and then they stopped just there.

“In my opinion, I thought the valuation that Cape Town Spurs was looking at for Velebayi, compared to Oswin Appollis, it’s a no-brainer – you can’t compare [the two players’ value]. At this point, what did Oswin achieved in the last year?

“So I think the valuation of Velebayi was crazy; I think Chiefs, to be honest, was very fair on their proposal and, in my opinion, they could have still add some more add-ons.

“Of course, they did not because they thought they were also fair on their proposal, and the deal fell through… I’ll be honest, at first Cape Town Spurs wanted R12 million, they came down to R10 million, and Chiefs’ offer was R5 million plus players.”

There’s a strong chance Kaizer Chiefs management will be prompted to up their offering price in a bid to land the 21-year-sensation.
