Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi suffered his heaviest defeat since taking over the reins last year.
AmaKhosi had some old comrades come back to haunt them; former forward Samir Nurkovic provided the first blow in the third minute, before Christian Saile put the visitors back on top shortly after Makabi Lilepo’s equaliser.
SuperSport United scored two unanswered goals in the second half to make the scoreline 4-1.
Nabi quickly apologised to fans in the post-match conference but didn’t entirely own up to the defeat, instead blaming it on Saturday’s game against Chippa United three days before.
On multiple occasions the Tunisian coach highlighted to the point that his players were tired from their Nedbank Cup clash, having given it their all – but that doesn’t equate to a 4-1 thumping.
SuperSport looked superior from the get-go, but Kaizer Chiefs could not consistently keep hold of the ball and put pressure on Gavin Hunt’s back four.
In Nabi’s defence, his players looked tired, but then, why play them?
Kaizer Chiefs have looked shaky all season with little fluidity across the lines – perhaps his style isn’t working.
Apology after the match
“So now I want to speak to the fans because I’m not someone who runs away from responsibility. I want to take this time to explain to them the situation and not necessarily to make excuses,” said Nabi.
“It is true that today’s result hurts them and I’m also the first person that it hurts as well as them. This is not the game that they should use to judge their team or at least the potential of their team,
“This kind of accident happens in all championships, and it can even happen that the score is higher than what we’ve seen today. It’s not possible to be a good team three days earlier and then three days after you are a weak team, it’s not possible,” the Kaizer Chiefs boss added.
“As I said, we cannot always give excuses but I’m very understanding when it comes to my players and today I understood that they gave their best like in the previous games and they were tired,
“So, that’s the reason why I would ask you [the media] to be indulgent with the players as you have done it in the happy times, do it also in the difficult times.”
Is Nabi the right man for Kaizer Chiefs?
