Kaizer Chiefs legend tears into Yusuf Maart amid crisis season.

Amakhosi are enduring yet another turbulent season, and Marks Maponyane has not held back. In a stinging critique, he questioned the leadership of the current captain, stating on Radio 2000, “He has no leadership skills.”

This damning verdict arrives as Chiefs languish in ninth place on the Betway Premiership table, with just 30 points.

Chiefs captaincy under fire

Yusuf Maart took over the captain’s armband at the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season. While he previously captained Sekhukhune United during the 2021/22 PSL season, his leadership at Chiefs hasn’t translated into success on the pitch.

Despite featuring in 31 games across all competitions and contributing two goals and three assists, Maart’s impact as a leader has come under intense scrutiny.

During a recent radio interview, Maponyane didn’t mince words:

“…You cannot leave this discussion without criticising the captain of Kaizer Chiefs. How can you have a captain who has no leadership skills?”

He went on to describe a failed crossfield pass by Maart that sailed embarrassingly into the stands:

“Like I saw last time, he tried a crossfield pass and it ended up in row 45… that doesn’t make sense to me.”

Chiefs’ struggles linked to lack of on-field leadership

Kaizer Chiefs have struggled all season under head coach Nasreddine Nabi. With eight wins, six draws, and twelve losses, their inconsistency has left fans frustrated and pundits critical.

Maponyane connected the team’s woes directly to a leadership vacuum:

“There are no leaders in this team, and the reason is simple: you cannot lead when you are not confident, and you cannot be confident when you are not winning.”

Two crucial league games and a shot at silverware

Chiefs have two league matches remaining, an away clash with Sekhukhune United and a home game against Polokwane City FC. While their league campaign seems destined to end in mediocrity, one chance remains to salvage pride.

They face arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday. It’s a golden opportunity to end their nine-year trophy drought—but doing so will require true leadership on the pitch.

Whether Yusuf Maart can rise to the occasion or continue to draw fire from legends like Maponyane remains to be seen.
