Some fans believe Jose Riveiro announcing his departure while Orlando Pirates were still in hunt for a treble affected the players.
Since the 49-year-old coach announced his departure, the Sea Robbers have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League and are all but out of the running for the league title. For the first time this season, the Buccaneers have suffered back-to-back defeats in the last eight days.
Speaking to the media, Riveiro said announcing his departure was to avoid speculations over his future at Orlando Pirates.
“I think [announcing the departure], it’s a good way of avoiding speculations. It’s a good way of keeping our home under control,” said Riveiro.
“At the same time, it was a move of being transparent. I think it was well executed. Why not do it this way? Maybe this is the first time something like this has happened, but it won’t be the last time that I can tell you.
Riveiro leaving Orlando Pirates end of the season
“So I think it’s a good way to understand the situation of the club and the situation of the coach. It allows us, the coaches and the players, to focus on the last part of the season. I’m glad with how the club handled the situation,” Riveiro said.
Since arriving at Pirates, the Spaniard had won five trophies. With the Nedbank Cup his only realistic chance of adding to the MTN8, he might still go out with a bang.
Riveiro has to ensure that Orlando Pirates beat rivals Kaizer Chiefs to leave a legacy at the club.
Can Riveiro end the season on a high?
