Johannesburg water systems recover following critical shortage

Key water reservoirs in Johannesburg have started to recover as Rand Water resumed full-capacity pumping.

According to Johannesburg Water (JW), Rand Water’s Palmiet System was restored overnight on Thursday. It is now operating at full load and affected areas should have already seen an improvement, writes the Rosebank Killarney Gazette.

JW says the recovery will be gradual in terms of restoration.

This has enabled the Grand Central reservoir to significantly improve, with pumping to the Grand Central tower beginning on Thursday morning.

“The Erand 1 reservoir capacity also improved overnight, and we have started pumping into the Erand tower this morning, JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said on Thursday.

“Other reservoirs in the Midrand area have also started recovering and are starting to supply. The Sandton system also slightly improved since last night and is supplying normally.”

Some water systems still strained

However, some areas, including South Hills and Linmeyer, are still facing water shortages as the South Hills tower remains empty due to limited supply from the bulk water provider.

JW says it will continue to provide alternative water sources to these areas until full restoration happens.

48-hour water outage affects over 10 Johannesburg suburbs

Meanwhile, residents in parts of Meadowlands and surrounding areas in Johannesburg faced a 48-hour water outagethat started on Tuesday, 12 November, due to crucial maintenance work.

JW confirmed that the water outage would affect all streets within Meadowlands extensions 1 to 12, parts of Orlando West, Dube, Mofolo North and Central, as well as Tshepo Themba Hospital, Meadowlands Hostel, and Dube Hostel.
