With the PSL crescendo in full flow, the next few weeks will decide who lifts the trophy.

Mamelodi Sundowns, who have won the last seven in a row, lead second-placed Orlando Pirates by nine points, but having played two extra games than the Soweto giants, it’s still anyone’s guess as to who will lift the trophy.

That’s the nature of sports – while the odds may be stacked against Jose Riveiro’s men, you can never rule out a comeback.

Rumours around the league

  • Orlando Pirates tried to sign Cape Town City youngster Jaedin Rhodes in January with no resolve. They will want to make it stick this offseason.
  • AmaZulu FC winger Tshepang Moremi, whose contract expires in June, is one of the PSL’s most sought-after talents. Sundowns, Chiefs and Pirates are all vying for his services.
  • Kaizer Chiefs’ last offseason target Asanele Velebayi, remains a candidate for the winter window, but his stock has undoubtedly lowered as Cape Town Spurs continue to decline, sitting fourteenth in the Motsepe Championship.
  • AmaKhosi are monitoring Richards Bay defender Lwandile Mabuya.

New talent in the PSL

Orlando Pirates have reportedly offered youngster Yanga Madiba a promotion to PSL soccer.

“They have already made that decision. For now, it’s as good as done, and it’s believed to be a three-year contract which would apparently run from July this year until June 2028,” a Soccer Laduma report read.

“He is still young, and they want him to grow and gain experience while learning from the older players.”

Another source said, “Yes, there are other left backs that the club is looking at to sign but they need to have their own development players in the squad as well just like other youngsters and that’s why they have offered him a three-year contract which is as good as done which is good for both the club and the player.”
