Mentorship has played a powerful role in Stella’s development.
Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSAf) is more than just a leading name in automotive manufacturing; it’s a launchpad for the country’s next generation of leaders. One inspiring example is Stella Khoza, who embodies IMSAf’s commitment to youth empowerment, innovation, and opportunity.
Stella’s journey: From graduate to industrial engineer
Stella Khoza’s journey with IMSAf began in 2023, fresh out of university with a Bachelor of Engineering in hand. She joined the company as an in-service trainee in the Manufacturing Engineering Department, eager but admittedly nervous about stepping into such a dynamic industry. “As a fresh graduate, it was both exciting and intimidating,” Stella reflects. “But IMSAf provided me with a strong foundation, offering exposure, guidance, and hands-on experience that shaped my confidence and career direction.”
Her growth was rapid. In 2024, Stella transitioned into IMSAf’s Graduate-in-Training programme, this time within the Supply Chain operations team.
Here, she refined her technical and interpersonal skills, rotating through departments and learning from seasoned professionals. By April 2025, Stella had assumed the role of industrial engineer in the paint shop, a testament to her hard work and IMSAf’s investment in nurturing young talent.
Driving innovation and Lean Manufacturing
In her current role, Stella is responsible for interpreting IMSAf’s strategic manufacturing objectives and plays a key part in the planning function. She assesses layout design, assigns resources, and ensures that current and future projects align with IMSAf’’s goal of achieving a Lean Manufacturing footprint. “I love that my work directly influences productivity and efficiency on the production floor,” she says. “It’s fulfilling to see tangible results from the changes I help implement.”
Stella’s contributions go beyond technical know-how. She’s actively involved in process evaluations, layout redesigns, and the introduction of lean tools and ergonomic assessments. Her fresh perspective and willingness to challenge the status quo have made her a valued voice in team discussions.
A culture of support and mentorship
Stella credits IMSAf’’s inclusive and empowering culture for her smooth transition from graduate to engineer. “From day one, I was welcomed into teams that valued knowledge-sharing, mentorship, and professional development. I never felt like ‘just a graduate.’ I was treated as a future leader, given responsibilities that challenged me, and surrounded by people who supported my growth.”
Mentorship has played a powerful role in Stella’s development. Working closely with experienced engineers, she gained not only technical expertise but also the confidence to lead meetings, handle complex tasks, and approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset.
Inspiring the next generation
IMSAf’’s commitment to youth empowerment and diversity has inspired Stella to pay it forward. She mentors interns, participates in youth development discussions, and serves as a role model for young women in engineering. “I hope to inspire other young women to pursue careers in STEM, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds,” she shares.
Continuous learning is at the heart of Stella’s journey. Supported by IMSAf, she is currently enrolled in a Management Development programme and has her sights set on an MBA. “IMSAf’’s support for education gives me confidence in my future growth within the company and industry.”
Stella’s advice for aspiring youth
To young people dreaming of a career in the automotive industry, Stella says, “Show up, stay curious, and never underestimate your potential, even if you’re starting with a one-page CV and no experience, like I did. Be open to learning, embrace challenges, and surround yourself with people who push you to grow.”
Through the stories of leaders like Stella Khoza, IMSAf demonstrates its unwavering commitment to empowering South Africa’s youth, driving change, fostering innovation, and building a future the country can be proud of.
