The annual matric year is currently under way, and with the amount of work scholars across the country need to cover to ensure that they set themselves up for success at the end of the year, there is no doubt that academics is their number one priority.
However, balance is equally important, and one way to let off some steam is by attending the annual matric dance.
For years, the event has been a major highlight of thousands of South African schools, with many going to great lengths to ensure that they make the evening one that will forever be remembered.
Recently, one matriculant had social media users in a frenzy when he extended a bold invitation to have none other than the Grammy Award-winning singer, Tyla accompany him as his partner to this year’s matric dance.
In a post shared on the social media platform TikTok, the pupil, Mollwane Madiba, can be seen getting his entire school involved in his matric dance proposal.
The video shows fellow pupils asking who Mollwane will be asking to the matric dance, followed by the revelation that it would be Tyla. Later, the man of the moment enters the video himself and asks the ever-important question.

While the “pretty girl from Joburg” is yet to respond, the news publication IOL reports that the two are no strangers to one another – she and Mollwane, who is the son of Princess Tirelo Molotlegi of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, briefly met during her recent performances in South Africa last December.
The teenager shared a picture of the moment on his Instagram page.
