President Cyril Ramaphosa will begin a state visit to the United States on Monday as he prepares to meet US leader Donald Trump.

The visit comes a week after the US welcomed a group of 59 white South African “refugees”. Ramaphosa is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House in Washington, DC on Wednesday. The exact time of the meeting has not been specified.

In recent weeks, Trump has accused the South African government of discriminating against minorities, particularly Afrikaners. Ramaphosa has refuted the claims of discrimination or white genocide, which Trump mentioned.

“There’s no genocide in South Africa. That is a fact that’s borne out of a lot of evidence,” he said.

“I’m not worried about anything. We’re going there to discuss trade and our bilateral relations and that’s what we’re going to discuss. It’s country to country and we trade with each other, so we have to relate to each other.

Trump and Ramaphosa to face off

“Just as he [President Trump] meets with other people and I also meet with other people, it’s state to state [and] we’re representing our peoples. We are going to have good discussions on trade,” Ramaphosa said.

Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe has been designated as the Acting President until 22 May.
