Identity of man shot in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court revealed

While initial reports indicated that the man shot and killed at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday was a state witness in a gang trial, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila has confirmed that this was in fact not the case.

‘The NPA has just been advised that the deceased who passed away following an alleged shooting inside the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court building, was an accused who appeared at Court D,’ said Ntabazalila.

Facing charges of murder

Dingalomoya Cintso, a 50-year-old taxi owner from Vrygrond, was facing charges of murder and attempted murder in a case linked to extortion in Muizenberg.

The defence counsel of the victim said that her client was consulting the instructing attorney just prior to the shooting.

Regarding the incident, Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais called it ‘unacceptable’ that a firearm could so easily be brought into the courthouse.

‘It is unacceptable that someone could enter a court with a gun,’ said Marais.

‘This highlights the urgent need for tighter firearm and ammunition control. I urge SAPS to act swiftly and bring the suspect to justice.’

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his body and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

The incident took place just outside Courtroom 4 shortly before tea time when two men entered the fourth floor when one fired a semi-automatic weapon.

‘Police remain tight-lipped’

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, spokesperson for the police, confirmed the details, stating: “Wynberg police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident at court in Church Road, Wynberg, on Tuesday, 8 April 2025.”

“The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his body and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation, and arrests are yet to be made.”
