Amakhosi reached the final after beating Sundowns in the semifinals on Sunday.

Word reaching the Mgosi squad desk is that Nasreddine Nabi was ready to step down as the Kaizer Chiefs coach if Amakhosi had failed to reach the final of the Nedbank Cup.

According to a source, before Sunday’s semifinal clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, Nabi told the players that he would resign if Chiefs fail to reach the final.

“I’m not sure if it was a strategy from him to motivate his players to fight for his stay or if he meant it. But whatever it was, it worked because the players showed a lot of commitment on the day,” said the source.

“The mood changed in the dressing room, the moment coach Nabi said that he would leave the club. The players were shocked by his announcement.”

Nabi joined Chiefs at the beginning of the season with a lot of expectation from the club fans who believed that the Tunisian would bring back the glory days at the Naturena-based club.

But things have not gone according to plan for Nabi. Chiefs have struggled in the league, but they still have a chance to win some silverware this season after reaching the final of the Nedbank Cup.
