A strong cold front swept across the country this week, bringing freezing temperatures to many parts of South Africa.

On Wednesday, the cold front caused sudden drops in temperature, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and even snowfall in some areas.

According to the South African Weather Service, this cold snap is expected to last until next week. However, slightly warmer temperatures are forecasted starting from next Wednesday in Gauteng, Limpopo, and the North West.

The cold front is expected to remain over the weekend

The Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal will experience relatively warmer conditions in the coming days. In Gauteng, cold conditions will persist this weekend, with morning temperatures expected to drop to single digits.

The forecast for Johannesburg predicts a minimum temperature of 6°C and a high of 17°C on Friday. In Pretoria, the minimum is also expected to be 6°C, with a high of 18°C. For the rest of the weekend, temperatures are expected to peak in the high teens as the cold front continues.

Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged Johannesburg residents to take precautionary measures to stay warm during the cold front.

“Residents of the City of Johannesburg are urged to prepare for a weather shift as the South African Weather Services has issued a warning for extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the City of Johannesburg from this coming Wednesday towards the week,” he said as per The Citizen.

“This drop in temperatures means that residents throughout the City of Johannesburg will be forced to use all sorts of heating devices to try and warm themselves in the process, making themselves vulnerable to fire incidents at home if heating devices are used unsafely/unattended,” Mulaudzi said.
