The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the old-age grant payment dates for May 2025. SASSA pays social grants to elderly people over 60, children (under 18), people with disabilities and war veterans.

SASSA OLD AGE GRANT PAYMENT DATE FOR MAY 2025:

The SASSA payment date for the old grant in May 2025 will be on Tuesday, 6 May 2025. Other grant payment dates, including the Disability grant, will be paid out on Wednesday, 7 May 2025 and the Children’s grant will be paid out on Thursday, 8 May 2025.

WILL THE VAT FREEZE AFFECT PAYMENT?

In March 2025, the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, announced that the VAT would increase by 0.5 % from 15% to 15.5%. However, on Thursday, 25 April 2025, the minister announced the government’s decision to reverse the Value Added Tax (VAT) increase that was set to be effective on 1 May 2025.

The National Treasury said that the decision not to increase VAT means that the planned measures to support lower-income households need to be withdrawn and other expenditure decisions revisited.

“The decision not to increase VAT means that the measures to cushion lower income households against the potential negative impact of the rate increase now need to be withdrawn and other expenditure decisions revisited.”

“To offset the unavoidable expenditure adjustments, any additional revenue collected by SARS may be considered for this purpose going forward,” the National Treasury stated.

SASSA WARNS OF FAKE NEWS ABOUT MAY 2025 PAYMENTS BEING DELAYED

SASSA warns of circulating fake news about the May 2025 grant payments being delayed and having an increase reversal.

Additionally, there were circulating news about the old age grant being stopped in May if certain documents are not updated by 30 April 2025.

“As SASSA, we would like to confirm that the message is incorrect and fake. This message is mischievous and we urge our beneficiaries not to panic, as no grant will be cancelled,” said SASSA.
