DURBAN: A heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms destroyed the fence of a house located in J section, Umlazi on Friday, 25 April 2025.
HEAVY RAIN DESTROYS FENCE
The heavy rain allegedly crashed the fence in the early hours of Friday morning.
Speaking to The South African, Thokozile Mkhize (67), owner of the property, recalled that she was asleep when she heard a striking sound in the yard, thinking it was lightning.
Mkhize said, “It was 2:30 in the morning when the striking sound woke me up. I looked outside the window, but it could not see anything as it was too dark, so I assumed it was a thunderstorm.”
She says that around 6 a.m., she saw a dam of water surrounding her house and quickly called her son, who stays in the outside building, for assistance.
Her son left his room to go and sweep the water, unaware that this would lead to a shocking discovery.
Malusi Ngcobo, Mkhize’s son, says that he was shocked to discover that the fence had crashed into the neighbour’s house and damaged their car.
“When I went outside the house, I could not believe what my eyes were seeing. The whole fence was gone. Cement blocks and mud were all over the neighbour’s house and even damaged her car,” he recalls.
The neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said that she was woken by the persistent sound of her car alarm.
“My car alarm was making a persistent noise and I could not understand why as I locked it. But when I woke up to see what was happening, I saw that a fence had collapsed in my yard and had damaged my car,” she says.
She says that she ended up not going to work, as the driveway was full of mud and large stones.
She says “I ended up not going to work as my job requires me to use a car and I cannot work without it. The driveway was full of stones and my car was damaged, so I could not use it.”
MULTIPLE ROADS LEFT WATERLOGGED IN DURBAN AFTER HEAVY RAINFALL
The heavy rain in Durban has left multiple roads waterlogged on Friday, 25 April 2025. According to East Coast Radio, numerous reports of flooding have been made.
Spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson, said, “On the N3 near Brickfield, there’s a lot of flooding. On the N2 south, there are large puddles forming. We also have a multiple vehicle collision as a result of water puddles on the M4 near the Riverside off-ramp, in the Durban North area.”
Jamieson urges motorists to be vigilant when using the road, especially when they notice a low road surface.
“Anywhere where there is [a] low road surface and you see water, be cautious and try not to cross any flooded bridges or roads under water,” said Jamieson.
Wiseman Dlamini, a forecaster with the SA Weather Service, says that a 60% to 80% chance of rainfall is expected to occur in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We are expecting 60% to 80% chance [of rain] over KZN. We also have a warning for disruptive rainfall. And that is the rainfall that might cause significant impact for areas along the coast,” said Dlamini.
