The two security guards, who were filmed dragging a patient out of the Karl Bremer Hospital in Cape Town, have been suspended.
A video clip of the incident went viral on social media after it showed the security guards dragging the patient through the hospital.
Wearing hospital gown
The patient was reportedly bleeding when she arrived at Karl Bremer Hospital and was manhandled by the security guards, who said the patient was a ‘bother’.
Karl Bremer Hospital is a district general hospital situated in Bellville in Cape Town.
The unnamed female patient can be seen lying on the floor wearing a hospital gown and holding what appears to be her medication.
She reportedly refused to leave after being discharged.
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness released a statement in response to the incident, saying: ‘Karl Bremer Hospital deeply regrets the filmed incident circulating on social media, in which a patient was handled by one of the security guards at the facility.
According to a report, an investigation was conducted and the hospital and service providers took internal actions to address the situation.
According to EWN, the patient was admitted as she had a head injury.
The Western Cape Health Department’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr Saadiq Karriem, said there was no excuse for the behaviour of the security guards.
‘That particular patient is well-known to the Karl Bremer hospital. I understand the staff see her regularly and often, and she had been discharged and apparently didn’t want to leave the hospital premises, and that’s when the incident took place,’ Karriem said.
