Popular gospel singer Hlengiwe Mhlaba denies joining MK Party after ANC refuses to fund her upcoming concert in Durban.
- The singer says she performs at all political events regardless of party affiliation as her music is meant to heal everyone.
Gospel singer Hlengiwe Mhlaba has denied rumours that she joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), saying she is “a woman of God and a musician, not a politician.”
The rumours spread after the ANC refused to sponsor her “20 Years of Grace” event planned for 22 March at the Play House in Durban.
“You are the second person to call me about this matter. First of all, I have never met or been approached by anyone from the MK Party. I think I need to clarify again that I am not a politician, but I am a woman of God.
“I also never joined the ANC as some people predicted. I hear people claiming that I have left the ANC to join the MKP. This is not true because I have never been part of the ANC,” said Mhlaba.
She said she asked the ANC to sponsor her upcoming event, but they said they had no money.
The ANC didn’t even invite her to their January 8 Statement event in Cape Town, she added.
Mhlaba said the MKP has never hired her to perform at their events either.
She was recently misquoted about telling people not to vote for MKP.
“In fact, I was misquoted. I only said that when people cast their votes, they must always remember the last word of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona when he told his brothers that they won’t rule this nation, but it would be ruled by the birds.
“I meant that they must not vote for white party but they should vote for any black political party,” says Mhlaba.
She revealed that Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi once invited her to his birthday party, but that didn’t make her an IFP member.
Mhlaba says she performs at all political events because her music heals everyone.
