Celebrity sangoma Gogo Maweni was released on R5 000 bail after spending almost a week behind bars after she was nabbed for a case of assault.
According to police reports, the Gauteng Province Cold Case Investigation Unit conducted an intelligence operation that ultimately led to her apprehension in the Mondeor area.
GOGO MAWENI PRAISES ANCESTORS AND GOD AFTER BEING GRANTED BAIL
Gogo Maweni was arrested last week and appeared before the Protea Magistrates Court. She appeared in court for a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, which dates back to 2019.
She was denied bail during her first court appearance. The defence argued for her release due to health reasons and limited access to medication while in prison.
However, the court also heard that Gogo Maweni is expecting twins. She was granted bail during her second court sitting, and her case was postponed to 11 February.
Thanks to her huge social media following, she often trends whenever she posts or gets posted. Gogo Maweni is trending against the backdrop of her first Instagram post after her release.
Taking to the picture-sharing app, she shares photos that seemingly have some cleansing. She captioned the post, ‘Dear ancestors and God for this lesson I’ll forever be grateful.’
The post has since warmed the hearts of many, with fans and fellow celebrities flooding her comment section with warm comments.
Surprisingly, she received support from other healers, with Dr A Dlamini being part of the gallery during the court proceedings.
The celebrated healer said to the media, “I am not condoning what she has been accused of. Whether she is guilty or not is a matter for the courts to decide.
“Having worked with and seen her charity work, I thought it important that I show my support for Gogo Maweni,” Dlamini added.
ARREST
Gogo Maweni’s arrest came after traditional healer Gogo Skhotheni alleged that the celebrity sangoma was linked to two murders.
She made the explosive allegations in a video shared on X by @EvansMathibe.
However, at the time, the NPA confirmed Gogo Maweni’s arrest but never mentioned the damning allegations. In a statement, Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA Johannesburg regional spokesperson, said:
“The accused was arrested on 19 January 2025 in connection with an alleged incident on 17 December 2019 in Dlamini, Soweto. It is alleged that Mofokeng used a bottle to assault the complainant, striking her in the mouth.”
“The matter was previously provisionally closed due to the untraceability of the complainant. However, further investigations have led to the accused’s arrest and court appearance,” the statement reads.
