The KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into a police vehicle that was spotted driving without a door.
A video of the vehicle was shared on social media by Yusuf Abramjee, showing a police officer driving the car with no door on the driver’s side.
The vehicle was involved in an accident in Durban North, where it collided with a taxi, leaving the female driver trapped inside. The door had to be removed to rescue the officer, but instead of towing the vehicle, another police officer drove it to the station. A second police vehicle was escorting the damaged car, despite it being deemed unfit for the road.
Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has condemned the officer’s decision to drive the vehicle and announced that internal disciplinary processes will be initiated.
The Commissioner emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive image of the police and regaining public trust, stating, “The management will not allow anyone to tarnish the image by disregarding regulations and procedures.”
The incident highlights the need for police officers to adhere to regulations and prioritise public safety. The investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability within the SAPS.
