Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture Gayton McKenzie given actress Nandi Nyembe financial assistance after a video of her in dire circumstances went viral.

Nandi is known for her roles in the SABC dramas Zone 14, Yizo Yizo, and Soul Buddyz, among many others.

GAYTON MCKENZIE DONATES TO NANDI NYEMBE

In a video posted on his X account, Gayton McKenzie is seen video chatting with Nandi Nyembe. This follows her viral video in which she appealed to the industry to help her with work. The wheelchair-bound star also claimed that her health had declined and that she did not have medical aid.

In the clip, Gayton asked Nandi for her banking details.  “This is not from the ministry. This is from me,” he told the veteran star.

He captioned the post: “We will fix the plight of our artists. We are hard at work already. This is the dying days of the suffering of our creatives.”

Gayton reiterated in a tweet that the money donated to the actress was not from departmental funds. Responding to a critic, he posted: “This is Gayton McKenzie helping, not Minister Gayton McKenzie. My heart didn’t leave me when I got appointed. I already send her money from my personal account.”

‘I DON’T HAVE MONEY ANYMORE’

Before Gayton Mckenzie’s generous donations, Nandi Nyembe appeared in a viral video in which she claimed that unemployment had forced her into dire circumstances.

“I don’t have money anymore,” the grey-haired wheelchair-bound actress said.

However, Nandi insisted that she was not looking for handouts.

She continued: “For people to feel pity for me, I don’t like it because I can do things. I don’t want [handouts], maybe groceries

“I need to work. It’s not like my brain is dead. Give me a script, and I’ll show you”

GAYTON TO THE RESCUE?

It would be the first time that Gayton McKenzie helped a down-and-out entertainer.

Last year, the Minister of Sport, Art, and Culture donated R5 000 to former Generations actor Roderick Japhta. The outspoken politician also revealed that he had helped pay for the funeral of Kwaito artist Mapaputsi, real name Sandile Ngwenya.

IS IT THE DUTY OF THE MINISTER TO HELP STRUGGLING ARTISTS?
