Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Willard Katsande has taken on a pivotal role within the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).

Known for his leadership and tenacity on the field, he has now shifted his focus to football administration. He is playing a key role in shaping the country’s football landscape.

Katsande’s New Position at ZIFA

ZIFA has appointed Katsande to its Ad hoc Committee on Diaspora and Global Interaction as reported by The Chronicle. The committee works to strengthen connections between Zimbabwean footballers, fans, and stakeholders abroad. A key aspect of this role involves identifying and recruiting top Zimbabwean talent abroad to strengthen the national team.

Over the years, Zimbabwe has benefited from discovering and integrating diaspora players into the national team setup. This includes stars such as Udinese’s Jordan Zemura and Huddersfield Town’s Tawanda Chirewa. Katsande’s involvement in this committee aims to expand these efforts and ensure a stronger national squad.

Who Else is on the Committee?

The Diaspora and Global Interaction Committee is part of a broader restructuring of ZIFA under its new leadership, headed by president Nqobile Magwizi. Katsande joins other key figures on the committee, including UK-based football enthusiast Marshall Gore as chairperson, Modern Ngwenya as vice-chairperson, and members such as Jadel Football Academy owner Walter Musanhu and former footballer Tizirai Luphahla. The committee is expected to benefit from their contributions.

A Legacy of Leadership

Katsande retired from professional football in 2022 after a successful playing career. He spent a decade at Kaizer Chiefs, making over 300 appearances and winning multiple domestic titles. He also served as Zimbabwe’s national team captain, earning 27 caps and scoring three goals. ZIFA expects his leadership experience on the field to translate into his new role.

Can Katsande Make an Impact Off the Field?

While Katsande’s playing career was defined by grit, determination, and leadership, his transition to an administrative role presents new challenges. His ability to bring the same passion and work ethic to ZIFA will determine the success of this initiative.
