Former Bafana Bafanacoach Shakes Mashabahas been hospitalised following a suspected bladder infection.
Sithembele Khala, speaking on behalf of the Mashaba family, told Radio 2000 that the 74-year-old Orlando Pirates legend was admitted to Helen Joseph Hospital in Auckland Park last week due to difficulty urinating.
The former Bafana Bafana coach has been out of the spotlight since he stormed into the SAFA elective congress in 2022. Last year Mashaba was inducted into the SA Hall of Fame.
“He was admitted on the 27th of January. He was very bad. His tongue was swollen and closed the airways. The care is not good. Remember, this is a public hospital, so it has its own challenges. The coach didn’t see a doctor for a day or two,” Khala said on Radio 2000 as per FARPost.

“When he finally saw a doctor, he was given a half diagnosis. They said they needed to put in a catheter, but when it was time to remove the catheter, the doctor didn’t come.
“An hour after it was removed, there were more complications, and he couldn’t pee again,” Khala said.
Shakes Mashaba has two stints as Bafana Bafana coach. His second stint was successful, guiding the side to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations unbeaten. With 32 wins from 58 matches at Bafana, Mashaba’s record is underrated with a 55% win ratio.
