Former AmaZulu head coach Pablo Franco Martin has revealed that Orlando Pirates once approached him.

At the time, the Buccaneers were looking for a coach, having parted ways with Josef Zinnbauer. Pirates eventually settled on Jose Riveiro, who stayed at the club for three years, winning five trophies.

Speaking to FARPost, Franco Martin was asked if he would be interested in coaching Orlando Pirates after Riveiro‘s departure.

“Of course I always want to train the best teams possible,” he told the publication.

“When I was at Simba I received a proposal from them but it was not the right time.”

“When I am involved in a project I like to respect the club, the people I work with and the fans so I don’t like to leave even when I receive a better offer. But as a coach of course I always want to train the best teams possible,” he told FARPost.

Orlando Pirates looking for Jose Riveiro’s replacement

“Pirates are such a big club and they are right now in the place they deserve, winning trophies and being dominant in the continent.

“Since I arrived in SA I always said that the credit is for their players, technical staff but also for their owner and board because they believed in a project and supported in the bad days. That is why they are collecting now.

“I already had few approaches from PSL teams this season. I just need an ambitious project which gives me the chance to fight for winning championships again,” said Franco Martin.

Orlando Pirates have been linked with several coaches since the departure of Riveiro.
